Official | Werder Bremen captain Ömer Toprak will leave the club this month

Werder Bremen have announced that their captain Ömer Toprak will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June.

It was unclear for some time whether the 32-year-old defender would sign an extension with the recently promoted club or not.

On the club’s website, they announced that they attempted to keep Toprak at the club with a new contract but sadly could not come to an agreement.

Bremen’s head of scouting explained: “We made him an offer that took various factors into account, but he turned it down. Of course we respect that.”

However, it seems Bremen had been preparing for a possible exit having brought in two defenders in the form of Amos Pieper (24) from Arminia Bielefeld and Niklas Stark (27) from Hertha BSC.
