Marco Reus: “There are still clubs that are above us in the food chain.”

In an interview published in today’s Bild am Sonntag, Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus discussed the club’s recruitment and how they can challenge elite clubs despite constantly selling their best players.

In recent years, Borussia Dortmund have sold players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ousmane Dembélé, Jadon Sancho and others whilst many would argue in doing so that they haven’t been able to challenge for the Bundesliga title.

How can BVB be constant if top performers regularly leave?

Of course, it’s difficult when you have great players who then leave the club. Of course, that always takes us further away from our goals at first but then we have to do what we have done over the past few years, stand together as a BVB family and look for solutions together. That’s what makes this club so special and extraordinary.

Still, isn’t that frustrating?

I wouldn’t put it that way. We have found solutions in the past despite the departures of players like Ilkay Gundogan, Jadon Sancho or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and many others. Of course, we would like to keep the best players but we can’t decide that alone, it’s not in our power and there are still a few clubs that are above us in the food chain.
