Manuel Akanji’s Borussia Dortmund future remains uncertain

Borussia Dortmund will travel to their Bad Ragaz training camp on Friday and according to Ruhr Nachrichten, Manuel Akanji (26) will also be present. The Switzerland international defender has 12 months remaining on his current deal and is unwilling to sign an extension, which puts the player in a tricky situation.

Since the transfer window opened on July 1, Borussia Dortmund have yet to receive any offers for Akanji. At BVB’s training camp, head coach Edin Terzić wants to prepare with his regular team which includes Mats Hummels, Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck ahead of Akanji – should a transfer not materialise, BVB don’t particularly want a player of Akanji’s stature being dissatisfied in the stands due to lack of playing time.

Two potential suitors for Akanji is Manchester United and Inter Milan. However, Erik ten Hag is actively pursuing attacking targets whilst Inter would rather wait and sign Akanji on a free transfer in 2023 – the Italian side have also looked into the possibility of signing former BVB defender Dan-Axel Zagadou on a free transfer.

A club to keep an eye out for, that would suit Akanji’s sporting and financial desires, is Juventus. According to Sky Germany, Matthijs de Ligt (22) has reached a verbal agreement with Bayern Munich and so, Juventus need a replacement. Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly is their prefered replacement for De Ligt but face competition whilst veteran defender Giorgio Chiellini has joined MLS side LAFC.
