Manchester City’s Ko Itakura completes Borussia Mönchengladbach medical

25-year-old Manchester City defender Ko Itakura completed a medical with Borussia Mönchengladbach ahead of joining Daniel Farke’s side, according to Sky Germany.

An announcement is expected in the coming days. Itakura will sign a four-year contract until 2026 and Premier League side Manchester City will receive a reported fee of just over €5m for the Japan international, who was entering the final year of his contract.

Gladbach’s pursuit of Itakura wasn’t easy, despite the Bundesliga club being his first option. This was because of interest from Premier League clubs, which City had hoped would create an auction for the Japanese defender.

Itakura spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Schalke, playing 32 games in all competitions, helping the Royal Blues earn promotion back to the Bundesliga at the first time of asking.

Itakura would become Gladbach’s first major signing of the summer transfer after signing Oscar Fraulo (18) from FC Midtjylland for €2m last week.
