Daniel Farke optimistic Yann Sommer will remain at Borussia Mönchengladbach amid summer exit rumours

Speaking to media after Borussia Mönchengladbach’s friendly win against Rot-Weiss Essen on Friday evening, head coach Daniel Farke discussed the Yann Sommer situation.

“I’m glad that Yann Sommer is joining us in the middle of next week,” said Farke. “He’s an outstanding goalkeeper and a great guy, a shining light for Borussia. It’s important that we have him in the group. I’m happy that he’s coming to us soon.”

Sommer (33) has reportedly reached an agreement on personal terms with Ligue 1 side OGC Nice, managed by former Gladbach head coach Lucien Favre.

Negotiations between the two clubs regarding a transfer continue but Farke appears confident that Sommer will remain at the club this summer, despite just 12 months remaining on his contract.

Regarding speculation this window, Farke added: “The rumour mill is always simmering at this level. I had allegedly agreed to many clubs as a coach and it was never an issue. You don’t have to believe everything.”

Borussia Mönchengladbach are expected to complete the signing of Ko Itakura (25) from Manchester City for around €5m in the coming week after the Japan international completed a medical on Friday.
