Ko Itakura under discussion at Borussia Mönchengladbach

Manchester City’s 25-year-old defender Ko Itakura is in talks with Borussia Mönchengladbach, according to Kicker.

Die Fohlen are in the market for a No. 6 and Itakura is a player that can operate both in central-defence and central-midfield. The Japan international spent last season on loan at Schalke but the newly-promoted Bundesliga side opted against activating their €6.5m purchase option for financial reasons.

Hoffenheim have also showed interest in signing Itakura, who would be allowed to leave Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, as they look to strengthen their defensive line. TSG have also shown an interest in signing Bayern Munich’s Chris Richards (22) on loan for a third time.

Speaking at his unveiling press conference, Gladbach head coach said: “Borussia conceded too many goals last season and that is something we have to work on.” Although funds may be a little scarce this summer for the Foals, signing Itakura from City could be a possibility.

Gladbach will also need to make a decision on the futures of Alassane Pléa, Marcus Thuram and Breel Embolo, all of whom are entering the final year of their contracts.
