Julian Nagelsmann: “We always need a certain basic level of desire in a game.”

Speaking after Bayern Munich’s 3-1 defeat against Mainz 05 on Saturday, head coach Julian Nagelsmann reacted to his team’s performance.

“Mainz did well, created many chances and deserved to win,” said Nagelsmann. “I think we always need a certain basic level of desire in a game. We didn’t have that today. That’s a bit human when you’ve just won the league but nevertheless, we still wear the Bayern crest on our chests.

“We’ll review this defeat. Actually, we had good structure with the ball and could have created more chances. Defensively, we weren’t sharp enough to prevent their chances.”

Goals from Jonathan Burkardt and Moussa Niakhaté put Mainz into an early 2-0 lead before Robert Lewandowski pulled a goal back. Mainz added a third through Leandro Barreiro.
