Hansi Flick reacts to Germany’s 2-1 defeat against Japan: “It’s brutally disappointing.”

Hansi Flick expressed his disappointment following Germany’s shock 2-1 loss to Japan in the opening game of their World Cup campaign. Germany originally took the lead through an Ilkay Gündogan penalty before second half goals from Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano gave Japan the win.

Speaking after the game Flick said: “It’s brutally disappointing. We had 78% possession in the first half, in the second half we had a lot of chances that we didn’t take. Japan clearly beat us in terms of efficiency.”

Germany’s next game is against the toughest opponent in their group in Spain. If Germany lose they will once again be facing an early exit from the World Cup in rather embarrassing fashion once again.

The second group game for Germany is on Sunday against Spain at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Before the game, the German players also voiced their opinion against FIFA not allowing them to wear the One Love armband in the game. This protest took place during the team photo where the players all covered their mouths with their hands. In the stadium, the German interior minister Nancy Faeser wore the One Love armband.
