Florian Wirtz a contender for Germany’s World Cup squad

Yet to play this season, Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz still has a chance to make Hansi Flick’s Germany squad for the World Cup, as reported by Sport Bild, via T-Online.

The 19-year-old suffered a cruciate ligament rupture against FC Köln in March and is currently undergoing rehabilitation. But Wirtz could yet make Flick’s 26-man squad if he can prove his fitness in training, and not necessarily match fitness for Bayer Leverkusen in the remaining eight Bundesliga matches before the World Cup.

Wirtz has already returned to individual training and the Bundesliga side are currently increasing his workload. The attacking-midfielder is expected to return to team training in mid-October.

In the Bundesliga last season, Wirtz scored seven and created 10, his best tally since making his debut in May 2020 under Peter Bosz. During his time at Die Werkself, Wirtz scored 19 and created 22 across all competitions.
