DFB Sports Court reject Freiburg appeal for Bayern Munich’s substitution error

On Friday, the DFB confirmed that the Sports Court had rejected Freiburg appeal after Bayern Munich had 12 players on the pitch for a brief period following a substitution error. Bayern’s 4-1 win remains intact and so they no longer need to worry about forfeiting the result.

Bayern Munich team manager Kathleen Krüger caused the confusion after holding up Kingsley Coman’s old shirt number on the fourth official board, thus resulting in 12 players being on the pitch for a period of 17 seconds, until it was brought to the attention of referee Christian Dingert by Freiburg defender Nico Schlotterbeck.

“I’m happy that we’ll keep the points,” said Nagelsmann in his presser. “I want to emphasise that I’m in no way disappointed with Christian Streich or Jochen Saier. I was just expressing my opinion. For me to be angry with someone personally, different things have to happen which are far away from the work realm. I still find Christian Streich to be tremendous as a guy and a coach. Their challenging the game hasn’t changed that.”

Freiburg have accepted the decision, but in a statement said: “The question remains whether the existing procedural regulation will continue to be appropriate in this form in the future.”
