Christopher Nkunku set to join Chelsea

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku is set to join Chelsea in July 2023 after all the documents between the two teams and player had been agreed.

Nkunku is set to move for more than his reported €60m release clause. This comes after Max Eberl hinted last week that Nkunku could leave the Bundesliga side in the summer: “I can’t confirm anything yet, but of course he’s very popular. Something in looming.”

The Frenchman joined RB Leipzig for €13m from PSG in 2019 and has played 159 games across all competitions, scoring 64 and creating 51. Nkunku signed an extension in the summer and has 3.5 years remaining on his current deal.

Last season, Nkunku won the Bundesliga Player of the Year as he scored 20 goals and provided 15 assists in 34 games for Leipzig. He continued this formed going this season scoring 12 goals and ending the year as the league’s top scorer ahead of the likes of Marcus Thuram and Niclas Füllkrug.

Nkunku earned a call up to the France World Cup squad, but ended up suffered a torn knee ligament injury during training which meant he had to miss out on Qatar, ultimately being replaced by Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani.

The transfer will be Leipzig’s record transfer sale, beating Naby Keïta’s €60m move to Liverpool in 2018.
