Max Eberl hints at Christopher Nkunku departure

Christopher Nkunku has attracted interest from Europe’s biggest clubs. Speaking at his maiden press conference as RB Leipzig sporting director, Max Eberl discussed the Frenchman’s situation.

“I can’t confirm anything yet, but of course he’s very popular. Something in looming,” said Eberl, who also discussed the situation regarding Konrad Laimer and whether he will be playing for the Saxony club next season: “I know that the probability is very low but he hasn’t decided yet. If it’s only one percent, I will fight for that one percent.”

Reported via our colleagues at Get French Football News last week, Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Nkunku, who has scored 17 and created four in 23 games across all competitions for Leipzig this season.

The 25-year-old has 3.5 years remaining on his current deal but is expected to sign a long-term deal with Chelsea from June 2023. Per several reports, Nkunku underwent a medical in Frankfurt ahead of a proposed move to the Premier League club in the summer to speed up the process.

Nkunku attracted attention from clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern Munich in the summer but opted to sign a contract extension in June until 2026 – the Frenchman’s new deal has a reported €60m release clause. As Todd Boehly and Graham Potter look to rebuild Chelsea, expect Nkunku to be top of their list.
