Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Yann Sommer out until further notice

Yann Sommer will be out for an unknown period after the Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper suffered an ankle injury in their 2-1 loss to Darmstadt in the DFB Pokal on Tuesday night – It is unknown if he will be fit for the World Cup.

The injury occurred early in the match when the Swiss international jumped to catch a ball and landed awkwardly. Sommer would continue trying to play but would then be subbed off for Tobias Sippel in the 13th minute.

It is a double blow for Gladbach as in the same game they lost Jonas Hofmann to a dislocated shoulder later in the game – the 30-year-old is likely to be fit enough for the World Cup.

Sommer has been in top form for Gladbach this season with his performances in games being the difference maker for Die Fohlen, most notable Sommer’s performance against Bayern Munich which saw him make a Bundesliga record of 19 saves.
