Benfica make late move for PSG’s Julian Draxler

As reported by Kicker, PSG’s Julian Draxler (28) is expected in Lisbon on Wednesday to complete a medical with Benfica.

A coup for the Portuguese side, SLB manager Roger Schmidt initially had his sights on Eintracht Frankfurt’s Daichi Kamada, who has entered the final year of his contract, but SGE’s Markus Krösche reiterated that the Bundesliga side have no intention of selling the Japan international.

Instead, Benfica are moving for Draxler, who needs regular football if he is to feature in Hansi Flick’s Germany squad for the 2022 World Cup. Per the report, it’s clear that although a contract at PSG, Draxler wasn’t going to get sufficient playing time and a departure has beckoned for some time.

Draxler joined PSG from Wolfsburg for €38m in 2017 and has played 198 games across all competitions, scoring 26 and creating 41. Yet to feature this season, the German attacking-midfielder played just 540 minutes of Ligue 1 football across 18 games last season.
