Speaking after Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 win against Augsburg on Saturday, head coach Marco Rose praised the performance of his team and the impact of Julian Brandt.
“Augsburg demanded everything of us,” said Rose. “We were on the right track after going 1-0 up but the equaliser deflated us a bit. The team reacted well and kept their patience. We have several opportunities to put the game to bed after going 2-1 up. Overall I’m happy with the performance. We can now take a breather during the international break.”
Starting in place of the injured Mahmoud Dahoud, Brandt scored the winning goal. Rose clearly happy with the German’s contribution: “He played well and scored a good goal. Jule can always be counted on for moments like that. He offered a lot to our play and worked hard without the ball.”
Mats Hummels was replaced with 25 minutes remaining, his substitution being a precaution.
“He had some problems moving a muscle and he didn’t feel good out there,” added Rose. “We thought it’s better to take him off. You can’t forget that he had no preparation for today. Today it was good for us to bring in fresh legs at the back, it gives us confidence knowing we have have a strong bench.”
Raphaël Guerreiro gave Borussia Dortmund the lead from the spot before Andi Zeqiri equalised for Augsburg. Julian Brandt’s winner came after 51 minutes, capping off an excellent counter-attack.
