Xaver Schlager reveals decision to join Wolfsburg

Speaking in an interview with Sport Bild, Wolfsburg midfielder Xaver Schlager reveals his reasoning behind joining the Bundesliga club instead of staying at RB Salzburg.

“We have a similar playing style here in Wolfsburg, and it’s more quiet here,” said Schlager. “The fans don’t get restless after three consecutive defeats and nobody thinks we’ll be champions if we win three games. This makes it easier for me to develop.

“Playing in the Champions League with Salzburg would have been cool but in the Bundesliga, you have eight Champions League games against Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen alone. I have big goals, you have to move forward quickly to achieve them.”

The 22-year-old Austria international joined Wolfsburg in the summer for €15 million, with RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach also interested at the time.

In an interview with Kicker in July, Schlager also revealed his dream would be to play for Arsenal one day.
