According to Sky Germany, Schalke are in negotiations to extend the contract of 29-year-old defender Benjamin Stambouli by three years.
The Frenchman’s contract expired on June 30 and is yet to sign an extension, or with another club. Stambouli will take a pay cut after Schalke imposed a €2.5m salary limit on new contracts with his previous contract seeing him earn €4.5m per year.
Stambouli played just nine Bundesliga games last season.
