Mainz 05 have officially confirmed the departure of William Bøving to 1. FC Nürnberg on loan. The 23-year-old Dane joins the 2. Bundesliga outfit for the duration of the 2026/27 campaign. The deal contains no purchase option, meaning Bøving is scheduled to return to Mainz next summer. His contract with the Rheinhessen runs through 2029.
Get German Football News reported on Thursday that Mainz and Nürnberg had reached a full agreement on the season-long loan after Bøving himself expressed a desire to leave temporarily in search of more regular playing time. Despite an exceptionally strong pre-season, competition in both the attacking line and the No. 8 position nevertheless left the former Sturm Graz talent with limited prospects of regular Bundesliga minutes this year.
A temporary move to Nürnberg should now afford him the opportunity to turn that encouraging summer into more consistent competitive minutes.

“We are convinced that William has developed positively with us,” M05 sporting director Niko Bungert noted in a club statement. “Given the competition in our attacking positions and at the No. 8 position, however, regular starts would have been difficult to guarantee. We believe that we have found the right club for him in 1. FC Nürnberg. We will follow his development closely and look forward to welcoming him back next summer after another developmental step.”
“I had the feeling from the beginning that FCN offered me a good opportunity to bring my qualities to the team and help us enjoy as successful a season as possible,” Bøving himself added.
