Mainz 05 attacker William Bøving is set to join 1. FC Nürnberg on loan for the 2026/27 2. Bundesliga campaign. Florian Plettenberg reports that the two clubs have reached a full agreement on a one-year loan for the 23-year-old Dane. The deal will not include a purchase option, with only final details left to resolve ahead of an expected medical on Friday.
The former Sturm Graz attacker only joined Mainz last summer but has struggled to establish himself consistently in the Bundesliga. Bøving has made 19 competitive appearances for the club, accumulating 529 minutes and scoring once. That first competitive Mainz goal arrived only last weekend during the 9-0 DFB-Pokal victory over fifth-tier VfB 1921 Krieschow.

Regular competitive minutes still appeared difficult to guarantee. Philipp Tietz, Sheraldo Becker and Ransford Königsdörffer all enjoyed strong summers, while Paul Nebel and Jae-sung Lee remain established attacking options. A season in Nürnberg should consequently provide Bøving with a clearer route to consistent playing time.
The Dane would arrive as one of the most valuable players in Nürnberg’s squad. Transfermarkt currently values Bøving at €3.5m, second among Nürnberg’s summer additions. Former Barcelona defender Mikayil Faye maintains a current estimated market value of €4.5m.
