Sport Bild reports Hoffenheim have ended their pursuit of Werder Bremen midfielder Jens Stage following Wouter Burger’s contract extension. The tabloid reports that Hoffenheim informed Bremen they are no longer working on a deal for the 29-year-old Danish international. Burger’s decision to remain in Sinsheim has removed the immediate need for another central-midfield addition.
Stage had previously reached an agreement with Hoffenheim over a four-year contract, but the two Bundesliga clubs failed to settle on a transfer fee. Werder reportedly demanded approximately €15m for one of their most important players. Hoffenheim were unwilling to meet that valuation, leaving negotiations at an impasse even before Burger committed his future to the club.
Stage’s chances of remaining at the Weserstadion have consequently increased significantly. A departure before the end of the summer transfer window nevertheless cannot yet be completely excluded.
According to Sport Bild, the midfielder remains open to joining a Premier League club should a suitable opportunity emerge. Bremen would, however, only consider selling Stage in response to an exceptionally high offer.
The Dane proved indispensable during Werder’s difficult 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign, registering ten goals and two assists across 29 Bundesliga appearances. His output and leadership ensure that Bremen retain considerable leverage despite their broader need to generate income through player sales.
