Why Ralf Rangnick rejected Bayern Munich

Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, and now Ralf Rangnick. The three coaches that have rejected Bayern Munich in the space of a month as the Rekordmeister’s search for a successor to Thomas Tuchel continues.

Bayern were confident of appointing Rangnick and were ready to offer the 65-year-old coach a contract until 2027. But despite final details being discussed, the German has made a complete u-turn in the last 24 hours, which has left club bosses scrambling.

After turning down Bayern, Rangnick will instead focus on his role as Austria’s head coach will preparations for Euro 2024 well underway.

But why did Ralf Rangnick decline Bayern Munich?

Both Rangnick and Bayern Munich’s Christoph Freund know each other very well from their time together at RB Salzburg, a reason for Rangnick being the latest frontrunner for the head coach job on Säbener Straße.

According to Kicker, Rangnick felt that as a result of taking on the Bayern job, Austria’s performance at the upcoming European Championship next month could suffer. Not only that, the former RB Leipzig and Manchester United manager didn’t want to return to day-to-day business.
