“We know that we can write history” Granit Xhaka on Bayer Leverkusen’s historic campaign

Bayer Leverkusen made it 42 games unbeaten across all competitions this season after beating West Ham in the first-leg of the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night.

Goals from Jonas Hofmann and Victor Boniface secured a famous win for Bayer, who are still on for the treble. With a place in the DFB Pokal final booked, Leverkusen can wrap up the Bundesliga title this weekend. Should Cologne beat Bayern Munich and Stuttgart also lose on Saturday, Granit Xhaka and Co. can win the title without kicking the ball, but they hope that isn’t the case. A win against Werder Bremen on Sunday will secure them the Meisterschale.

“We know that we can write history. For the club, for the fans, for ourselves,” said Xhaka. “We will do everything we can to close the bag.”

Bayer Leverkusen leave it late against West Ham

This Bayer Leverkusen team just never know when to give up. Not for the first time this season, they left it late. Hofmann opened the scoring in the 81st minute before Boniface doubled his team’s lead in stoppage time, with both players coming off the bench.

“Once again players come from outside and decide the game,” added Xhaka. “We have a squad where everyone actually belongs in the starting eleven. You win games with a few players, but as a team you win titles.”
