Thomas Tuchel discusses Bundesliga title race after Bayern Munich defeat

Bayern Munich missed the chance to close the gap to Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday afternoon when they suffered a 1-0 defeat against Werder Bremen, leaving the Rekordmeister seven points adrift from the Bundesliga leaders.

Speaking on the title race, Thomas Tuchel reiterated that there’s still a long way to go:

“It’s still very early,” said Tuchel (h/t: iMiaSanMia). “We haven’t even finished the first half of the season since we still have to play against Union Berlin. We don’t have to think and talk about the title yet. We dropped three points today and we have the chance to do better on Wednesday.”

Ole Werner’s Bremen made it difficult for Bayern in the first half with the visitors taking the leading through Justin Njinmah, only for it to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up. Bayern continued to improve in the second half but Bremen defender heroically, and then took the lead through former Bayern player, Mitchell Weiser.

Defeat at the Allianz Arena on Sunday leaves Tuchel’s side seven points behind Bayer Leverkusen with a game in hand. On Wednesday, Bayern have an opportunity to close the gap to four points should they beat Union Berlin after the fixture was postponed back in December due to snowfall.

After Bayer Leverkusen’s impressive comeback win against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga Topspiel on Saturday evening, Bayern’s game against Bremen was an opportunity to keep pressure on the leaders, but it’s now the Rekordmeister that are starting to feel the pressure.

As Tuchel explained during the week, there is pressure on everyone in the title race, but for Bayern, the pressure may have become too much.
