Simon Rolfes on if Xabi Alonso will stay in the summer: “I’m sure of that”

Speaking on Sport1 TV programme Doppelpass (via kicker), Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes was quizzed on the future of Xabi Alonso.

When asked if Alonso will be at the club beyond the summer, Rolfes said: “Yes, I’m sure of that.” The former midfielder then provided further comment on why he thinks this: “One is the contract, the other is how comfortable he feels, the family, himself. That he knows what he has in the club. That he knows that he has a very good team and that we will also have a very good prospect next year.”

Rolfes also adds: “That we are set up by the team in such a way that there is no upheaval because many players leave us, but that we have an absolute top team available, these are all points that, in addition to contracts coaches like Xabi, but also players who arouse interest from other clubs, often keep with us.”

Alonso has begun to attract interest from Liverpool to replace Jürgen Klopp at the club and this has resulted in increased speculation on the former midfielder’s future at Leverkusen. Although he himself has stated he is committed to Leverkusen, the noise surrounding Alonso’s future has still not died down.

On Saturday, Leverkusen continued their push for the title as they extended their lead on Bayern Munich to five points after a convincing 3-0 win over the defending champions.

Alonso’s stock continues to rise and if he can break Bayern’s 11-year stranglehold on the Bundesliga title then he. will become the most wanted manager in world football.
