Serhou Guirassy sets Stuttgart record as high-scoring season continues

Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring for Stuttgart against Darmstadt which strengthened the club’s grip on third, and a place in next season’s Champions League. But not only that, the Guinean forward’s goal is a new record.

As per Opta, no Stuttgart player has scored more than Guirassy’s 18 Bundesliga goals after 22 matchdays. The 27-year-old scored 10 league goals in the opening five games as Stuttgart surprised many. Sebastian Hoeneß’ side are rightfully in the mix for European football as alongside Bayer Leverkusen, they’ve been playing the best football.

Only two teams have scored more Bundesliga goals than Stuttgart (51) this season: Bayer Leverkusen (57) and Bayern Munich (59). With upcoming fixtures against three struggling teams: FC Köln, Wolfsburg and Union Berlin, VfB will be looking to secure a place in the Champions League for the first time since the 2009/10 campaign.

Serhou Guirassy: A man in demand

Guirassy missed Stuttgart’s opening four games of 2024: two due to a hamstring strain and a stomach problem, and two whilst being on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations. For VfB, that couldn’t have worked out better as it meant that Guirassy would likely remain at the club beyond the January transfer window.

But Guirassy won’t be short of suitors in the summer. Although contracted until 2026, Guirassy, the club’s top scorer with 20 goals in 18 games across all competitions this season, has a reported €17.5m release clause, which will become active in the summer. Alongside a list of Premier League clubs, Atlético Madrid and Milan have shown interest in the 27-year-old, meaning a departure in the summer transfer window is likely.
