PLAYER RATINGS | Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Bayer Leverkusen

Both teams came of a tough week with Borussia Dortmund securing passage to the Champions League semi-finals, whilst Bayer Leverkusen won the title last week and also maintained their unbeaten run in a tough draw with West Ham in the Europa League.

The first half was an uneventful affair with neither side having a real chance to on goal. Leverkusen dominated the ball but was unable to really do anything with it. There was a contentious penalty decision when Emre Can stepped on the back of Jeremie Frimpong’s leg, but no penalty was given.

In the second half, there was a slight improvement in both teams but the game picked up in the final 10 minutes when Niclas Füllkrug had seemingly won Dortmund the game. There was a scuffle between the players which had saw Victor Boniface sent off, but the red card was overturned by VAR.

Then the inevitable happened, Leverkusen scored right at the death. In the 97th minute, Florian Wirtz won a corner for Leverkusen and with the resultant corner he crossed it in for Josip Stanisic to equalise for Leverkusen to earn a deserved point. This is the second game in a row that Wirtz has came on in the second half and completed turned the game around in Leverkusen’s favour.

The draw maintains Leverkusen’s unbeaten run in all competitions, whilst it means Dortmund’s game against RB Leipzig next week will be a big decider in them finishing in the top four.
