Matthijs de Ligt to start against Real Madrid

After missing Bayern Munich’s last two games, Matthijs de Ligt will start for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid.

The Dutchman suffered a knee injury in their Bundesliga game against Eintracht Frankfurt and subsequently missed their first-leg clash against Real at the Allianz Arena, and last weekend’s game against Stuttgart.

But speaking at Tuesday’s press conference, Tuchel has confirmed that De Ligt will start.

“Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano don’t come off well for me. At the moment, Matthijs and Eric [Dier] are ahead. Matthijs has been given the green light, so he will play tomorrow,” said Tuchel.

Matthijs de Ligt and Eric Dier create a formidable defensive partnership

When Eric Dier joined from Tottenham Hotspur in January, few predicted that the Englishman would waltz into Bayern Munich’s defence, ousting summer arrival Kim Min-jae, but he’s just done that.

Alongside De Ligt, who received some criticism himself early on in the season, has come on leaps and bounds since Dier arrived in Germany. Together, the duo have excelled and when Kim or Dayot Upamecano have come into the team, the latter have looked worlds apart from the aforementioned duo.
