Mats Hummels: “We played with courage and heart.”

With his Borussia Dortmund future undecided, Mats Hummels (35) may have played his last game for the club. He and his teammates will certainly be disappointed following their Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid after they were made to regret not converting one of their three early chances, but Hummels and BVB can hold their heads high following a phenomenal European campaign.

Borussia Dortmund certainly wore their hearts on their sleeves. Up for the final from the get-go, Niclas Füllkrug, Karim Adeyemi and Marcel Sabitzer all came close to giving Die Schwarzgelben the lead in the first-half. But Real remained resilient and as has often been the case in the last 11 years, Los Blancos were crowned European champions.

But Hummels certainly had admiration for Borussia Dortmund’s performance.

“We played a great game,” said Hummels (h/t: Ruhr Nachrichten). “We played with courage and heart, and everything that goes with it, with footballing class. We launched some incredible attacks, but we missed the chance to score.

“Then we made a few small mistakes and Real struck at some point, like they have done for 100 years.

“We had four great chances, one of which should have gone in. No blame at all, it was a great game from everyone.”
