Mats Hummels commends ‘mature’ performance as Borussia Dortmund secure Champions League spot

Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 win against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday secured a place in next season’s Champions League for Die Schwarzgelben. Their win means the Bundesliga receive a fifth place in next season’s competition, as Germany can no longer be caught by France or England in the UEFA Coefficient.

Sitting fifth in the Bundesliga with three games remaining, Dortmund will still hope to finish fourth, above RB Leipzig, but can no longer be caught by Eintracht Frankfurt, who sit sixth.

Speaking in a press conference after the game, Mats Hummels – who was one of Dortmund’s best performers on the night – spoke of a ‘mature’ performance: “We were very grown-up and very mature.

“We are also happy that we have now qualified for the Champions League. We have covered up a poor Bundesliga season with a strong season in the Champions League.”

In what was arguably Borussia Dortmund’s best performance this season, Niclas Füllkrug put his side in the lead in the the 36th minute with an exquisite finish.
