Julian Nagelsmann could extend his contract as Germany manager

kicker reports that Julian Nagelsmann could extend his contract as Germany’s head coach before the beginning of Euro 2024.

Talks between Nagelsmann and the DFB have already taken place and were positive with Nagelsmann showing an interest in a potential extension. The former Bayern Munich manager’s current deal expires after the Euros.

However, the contract could come with certain conditions. One example is the performance of Germany at the upcoming Euros. If the nation fails to reach a goal Nagelsmann and the DFB set, then it is unlikely that Nagelsmann would stay on as head coach.

This would stop the DFB from learning from previous mistakes where they gave coaches contract extensions before tournaments in which they failed. This happened with Joachim Löw in 2018 and German women’s national team coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg in 2023.

How this affects the DFB’s pursuit of Jürgen Klopp is unknown as the current Liverpool manager wishes to take a sabbatical for a year once he leaves the club in the summer. Whilst it is also unknown what Nagelsmann’s plans are for returning to club management as this summer several high-profile jobs will be available.
