Germany likely to receive additional Champions League spot

Germany and the Bundesliga will likely receive one of two additional Champions League spots next season.

Due to the new format of UEFA club competitions next season, there are an additional two Champions League spots available. These will be allocated based on each country’s clubs’ performance in Europe.

Essentially, the more a club from your country wins and progresses, the more points the association gathers.

Italy have all but secured an additional spot, leaving the Premier League and Bundesliga to fight for the last spot.

Thanks to Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both progressing to the last four of the Champions League, the Bundesliga is in a strong position.

What’s more, Arsenal (at the hands of Bayern) and Manchester City (Real Madrid) crashed out of the competition in the quarter-finals.

Bayer Leverkusen take a 2-0 lead to West Ham United in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday evening. Should the newly crowned German champions progress, it will guarantee that Germany will receive the additional spot next season.

This means whoever finishes 5th in the Bundesliga will play Champions League next term.

Season ranking 2023/24

  2. Germany (17,642)
  3. England (16,875)
  4. Spain (15,312)
