Borussia Dortmund squad update ahead of Bundesliga resumption: Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen travel

Jadon Sancho’s much-anticipated return to Borussia Dortmund from Manchester United was officially sealed on Thursday, marking a reunion between the English winger and the Black & Yellow faithful. Sancho previously played for the German club from 2017 to 2021, and amassed 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 appearances for the club.

The announcement of Sancho’s return was accompanied by a video of him on the training ground alongside his teammates. Despite the excitement surrounding his comeback, head coach Edin Terzic emphasised the importance of a gradual integration process, considering Sancho’s limited appearances since August.

“He turned up here yesterday with a huge smile and had a lot of fun with us,” said Terzic. “We will use the session today to decide how many minutes he has in the tank. He is healthy and has trained a lot in the last few weeks, both at Manchester United and individually. He hasn’t played for a very long time. We can’t afford to rush him through so quickly that he misses training sessions or matches through injury.”

The next few days will be crucial to test Sancho’s fitness and working out the best course of action for the upcoming Bundesliga fixtures.

In addition to Sancho, another new face at Dortmund is Ian Maatsen, who recently joined from Chelsea on loan until the end of the season.

Terzic spoke positively about the left-back, describing him as a “technically skilful player with great pace and a great left foot.” The head coach also confirmed that both will travel to Darmstadt but it will be decided on Saturday if they will have any involvement in the game.
