Bayern Munich make first contact with Xabi Alonso

As reported by Sky Germany, Bayern Munich have made their first contact with Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso.

With Thomas Tuchel confirmed to be departing Der Rekordmeister in the summer, it has been widely reported that Alonso is Bayern’s number one target to succeed his rein in charge. However, up until now, there had not been contact between the two parties.

Regardless, it is understood that the record champions have received a positive signal from the Spaniard about making the move to Bavaria at the end of the campaign. Nevertheless, a final decision is far from being made.

According to Sky, Bayern would have to dig deep into their pockets and offer Die Werkself anywhere between €15 million and €25 million if they are to guarantee Alonso’s services, as his buyout clause of €15M only comes into effect in 2025.

However, Bayern have been informed that if Alonso leaves Leverkusen this summer, he will join Der Rekordmeister. Liverpool are the other club to show considerable interest in the Spaniard, but it is said that Alonso considers the legacy left by Jürgen Klopp as difficult to match, and there is far more risk involved in succeeding at Anfield.

Despite this, it is surprising that Alonso would begin discussions regarding taking over at the Allianz Arena while in a current title race with the Bavarian outfit. Having stated in late February his intentions to remain focused on Leverkusen until the end of the campaign, this would come across as a change of heart for the Werkself’s head coach.

Nonetheless, Leverkusen will do all they can to ensure they keep Alonso in charge. Sporting director Simon Rolfes has already stated his confidence in retaining the former Real Madrid midfielder, but whether Bayern will be able to force their hand is yet to be seen.
