Why Manchester United should be scared of Bayern Munich

On Saturday afternoon, Eintracht Frankfurt stunned the entire world when they comfortably demolished Bayern Munich 5-1 at the Waldstadion. It was a result that emphasised the struggles that the Rekordmeister have been experiencing for a significant period of time now.

However, while the margin of defeat was completely unexpected, those who watch the record champions every week will know that they have been far from convincing since Thomas Tuchel took charge. As for the Bayern head coach, he explained after the game that performances like this can never happen again:

“I’m also very disappointed with the second half. The clear goal was to win the second half, even with two goals. Under no circumstances can we continue to play at this level.”

Nevertheless, despite Bayern’s poor performance, their postponed clash with Union Berlin the week prior could explain why they were not quite at the level they needed to be to take on Die Adler. Without a game for nine days, Der Rekordmeister could be excused for being out of rhythm, but ultimately, losing by such an embarrassing scoreline is not an option for the record champions.

With Manchester United preparing to host Thomas Tuchel’s side in the Champions League on Tuesday, the Red Devils should be expecting a reaction at Old Trafford. Bayern will be out to right their wrongs from Saturday, and after another dismal performance in the Premier League, there is reason to be concerned from a United point of view.

Nothing less than a convincing win away from home will appease the Bayern faithful, as well as the Bayern squad, and with a Champions League group stage unbeaten streak to maintain, there is a lot of expectation on the German champions. As Thomas Müller explained on Saturday: “Losing 5-1, there has to be a reaction. The anger engine has to come on. We will fight back and come back.”
