Union Berlin will not activate buy option for Timo Baumgartl

According to Sky Germany, Union Berlin will not activate the €2m buy option in Timo Baumgartl’s loan deal but the centre-back has attracted interest from other Bundesliga clubs.

Baumgartl has only played seven games for Union this season struggling to break into the defence having fought testicular cancer at the beginning of the season. However, the 27-year-old would like to stay in the Bundesliga instead of returning to PSV Eindhoven.

The centre-back has attracted interest from former club VfB Stuttgart while Hoffenheim and Hertha Berlin have also previously shown interest in Baumgartl. PSV are willing to allow the centre-back to leave for €1.5m in the summer.

Baumgartl joined Union on loan in 2021 and in his first season was key in helping them qualify for the Europa League until he was diagnosed with testicular cancer causing him to miss the run-in. Baumgartl joined PSV in 2019 from Stuttgart for €12m.
