As reported by Florian Plettenberg, Union Berlin have stepped up their interest in Monaco left-back Ismail Jakobs.
Union had previously shown loose interest in the 23-year-old, however, talks with the Monaco defender have now taken place. It is believed that the capital club would have to part way with €10m – €12m to secure Jakobs’ signature ahead of next season.
However, despite the concrete interest in the full-back, an offer has not yet been made with Die Eisernen still monitoring the situation regarding Robin Gosens. Throughout this transfer window, Urs Fischer has been looking to strengthen the left-hand side of his side as Union prepare for their first foray into the Champions League.
Last season, Jakobs made 41 appearances for Monaco collecting four assists in all competitions. The versatile full-back would feature in a variety of positions for the French outfit last campaign, including a few fleeting cameos as a left-winger.
As Union look to compete on three fronts next season, quality and depth will need to be added to the side this summer. The 23-year-old shares a similar profile to Gosens, and if Urs Fischer does indeed miss out on the more experienced Gosens, then Jakobs would be the ideal resolution.
