Bayern Munich face Mainz in the DFB Pokal on Wednesday evening in what should be a welcome distraction for Julian Nagelsmann. The Rekordmeister are yet to win in 2023 with three successive draws against RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt and Cologne. Bayern and Nagelsmann will hope a win against Mainz will provide as the catalyst to get their season back on track.
Surprisingly, Bayern Munich were rather busy on deadline day. Marcel Sabitzer joined Premier League side Manchester United on loan for the remainder of the season whilst an opportunity to sign João Cancelo prompted Bayern into action. The Portuguese defender joins on loan for the rest of the season with a reported €70m option.
However, Cancelo isn’t expected to start against Mainz on Wednesday. Instead, Kicker suggest that Nagelsmann will opt for the same players that started in Bayern’s 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday evening. Joshua Kimmich is again expected to act as a single-pivot behind Jamal Musiala and Thomas Müller.
Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman will provide the width behind Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
