Piero Hincapié not for sale this summer

Sky Germany reports that Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié is not for sale this summer despite the Ecuadorian being linked with a move to Liverpool.

The 21-year-old is considered a key player under Xabi Alonso as he can not only play as a centre-back but also as a left-back, however, Hincapié missed the opening game of the season as he is not only suspended but is also suffering from a broken ankle which he is still recovering from.

Hincapié’s importance to Leverkusen means no price tag could convince the club to sell the defender this summer. Reports from England had suggested that Liverpool were interested in signing Hincapié from Leverkusen this summer as they look to bolster their defence.

Bild previously reported that Leverkusen would only sell for a fee upwards of €70m as the defender extended his contract at the club until 2027 in February. This recent report from Sky now shuts down any talks of a potential departure of the Ecuardion.

This will provide a big boost to Leverkusen as it is looking increasingly likely that the summer window will end with Moussa Diaby the only key player to leave. After improving massively under Xabi Alonso and being able to keep so many key players, Leverkusen now find themselves in a situation where they can challenge Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
