Phillip Tietz watched by Julian Nagelsmann on Saturday

Kicker reports that Julian Nagelsmann was at Augsburg on Saturday watching Augsburg striker Phillip Tietz in their 3-2 win against Wolfsburg.

Nagelsmann is still looking for a second striker for the national team squad likely behind Niclas Füllkrug and Tietz could be a surprise call-up in November for the international break.

The 26-year-old has experienced a slow start to life in the Bundesliga but under Augsburg’s new coach Jess Thorup, Tietz has come into his own. In his first game under the Dane, Tietz scored and assisted against Heidenheim before scoring once again in Augsburg’s win at the weekend.

Striker is a current issue for Germany as they do not possess a striker who is of European football quality. Füllkrug has been a reliable option for Germany since the World Cup but away from the 30-year-old, the options are bleak. Maximilian Beier is the other striker who should be given a chance in the senior national team as he is the second-highest-scoring German in the Bundesliga behind Leroy Sané and offers something different to Füllkrug.

The last striker to be called up to the national team was Union Berlin’s Kevin Behrens, however, the 32-year-old has failed to match his early season form in a struggling Union side.
