Borussia Dortmund have this afternoon announced the contract extension of Mats Hummels.
Hummels, who had a contract until the end of the season, has signed a new one-year deal that will keep him at the club for another season. The 34-year-old has had an exceptional campaign which sees Borussia Dortmund just one win away from their first Bundesliga title since 2012.
“With his experience and leadership, it’s very good that Mats will still be available to our young team next season,” said sporting director Sebastian Kehl. “He’s a very, very important player for this team because he gives it a lot in terms of hierarchy, in terms of leadership.”
In Reus’ absence, Hummels has played a key role as captain with 37 games across all competitions this season.
“Everyone knows how much fun it is for me to play at Signal Iduna Park with our fantastic fans. I didn’t make the decision easy for myself. There was a long weighing-up process. Now, at the end of the season, I can say: I’m still really up for another year,” said Hummels upon signing an extension.
“The focus now goes straight back on the game against Mainz on Saturday. We still have 90 intense minutes ahead of us. After that, we hope to celebrate something big together.”
During his time at Borussia Dortmund, sandwiched between three seasons at Bayern Munich, Hummels has played 467 games for Die Schwarzgelben across all competitions. The central-defender also has goals to his name with 34 and has a creative presence in defence with 22 assists.
Of his six Bundesliga titles, Hummels won two of them at Borussia Dortmund between 2010 and 2012 and has also won two DFB Pokals with BVB in 2012 and 2021. Hummels was also a part of Jürgen Klopp’s Dortmund team that lost the 2013 Champions League final against Bayern.
