In a talk with Ruhr Nachrichten, Borussia Dortmund’s Marius Wolf revealed that he underwent heart surgery, which was the reasoning for his absence in the Autumn.
“I had atrial fibrillation,” said Wolf. “The heart rhythm wasn’t normal. I noticed that clearly. Of course, you get queasy and weird and first because you don’t know what it is. It was a sleepless night. I laid in bed at home and didn’t know what was going on. I won’t describe the thoughts now, but it certainly wasn’t nice.”
Wolf stated that there was only three days between his diagnosis and the operation, of which only those in his close circle knew about until now. “I did the examination and was told that I had to do the surgery, that as a competitive athlete there’s really no way around it,” added the 27-year-old.
Just 10 days after the operation, Wolf was able to start running again and since the turn of the year, has become a key player under Edin Terzic. Wolf also revealed that he had to take a blood thinner for a month and wasn’t allowed to do team sports, and so had to train alone but since the January training camp, he’s come off medication and is now allowed to do everything again.
Borussia Dortmund have won eight successive Bundesliga games to start 2023, of which Wolf has featured in six of them, predominantly at right-back. Level points with leaders Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund face an important game against RB Leipzig on Friday night at the Signal Iduna Park.
