Marco Rose comments on Joško Gvardiol’s RB Leipzig future

As reported by Bild, RB Leipzig head coach Marco Rose has commented on the future of star defender Joško Gvardiol.

The defender has already been heavily linked to a move away from Saxony and was pursued by Premier League side Chelsea in the winter.

Earlier this week, the Croatian international gave an interview with The Times where he publicly announced his ambitions of one day playing in the Premier League. It was reported that Chelsea submitted a €90m bid for the central defender. However, Leipzig didn’t want to sell and no agreement was reached. Instead, the 21-year-old extended his contract until 2027 with the Saxons.

On Wednesday evening, Gvardiol lived up to the hype by putting in a man-of-the-match performance in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City. Not only did he score a goal but also kept Erling Haaland quiet. The 21-year-old also had the most touches on the ball (89).

Speaking after the game, Leipzig head coach Marco Rose was firm with his words: “As a coach, I want to work with the best players because we want to develop things further. Josko is our player and will remain our player.”

Rose is adamant he will keep the central defender for one more year at least. In 2024, Gvardiol’s contract will include a release clause of €112m.

With the departures of Konrad Laimer and Christopher Nkunku this summer, it’s key that Leipzig keep the likes of Gvardiol.
