Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg released for negotiations, Mainz in pole position

As reported exclusively by Sky Germany, Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg has been given permission to negotiate with clubs with Mainz in pole position to sign the Dutch defender.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Schalke but missed 20 games across all competitions with an ankle injury. His performances for S04 were enough to convince Mainz to make a move for van den Berg with Christian Heidel wanting to finalise a deal. M05 will also have to move quick as according to Florian Plettenberg, two more German clubs are interested in signing the Dutch youth international.

Van den Berg landed in Frankfurt on Thursday afternoon after the Premier League club released him. The player is leaning towards a move to Mainz, but it’s not yet clear on whether or not it’s another loan move for the Dutchman, or signing for the club on a permanent basis.

During his time at Liverpool, van den Berg has played 270 minutes for the first team.
