Jakov Medić set for medical with Ajax

The Hamburg Abendblatt reports that St Pauli defender Jakov Medić is set to have a medical ahead of a move to Ajax.

St Pauli have announced that the defender is not a part of the squad ahead of their game at home against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday. Newly promoted Heidenheim had previously shown an interest in Medić however the prospect of European football is a clear draw for the Croatian.

Medić’s contract at St Pauli expires next summer, so they have been put into a position where they have to sell the defender or risk losing him for nothing next year. The 24-year-old is currently valued at €2m according to transfermarkt.

The 24-year-old has already featured for St Pauli as they kicked off their 2.Bundesliga season with a 2-1 win away at Kaiserslautern last Saturday.

Whether the move for Medić impacts Ajax’s pursuit of VfB Stuttgart’s Hiroki Ito is unknown. What is clear is that Ajax sporting director Sven Mislintat is using his contacts in German football to influence Ajax’s transfer business this summer.
