Heidenheim promoted to the Bundesliga as champions

After final day drama in the 2. Bundesliga, Heidenheim are promoted as champions.

With Hamburg leading and Heidenheim 2-0 down against Jahn Regensburg after a five minute brace from Prince Osei Owusu, Heidenheim needed a win to ensure promotion to the Bundesliga. A Benedikt Saller own goal sparked a remarkable comeback and with 11 minutes of added time, persistence paid off for the visitors.

Jan-Niklas Beste equalised from the spot for Heidenheim in the third minute of stoppage time before Tim Kleindienst scored a winner for FCH in the ninth minute of added time, securing the 2. Bundesliga title on goal difference after Darmstadt suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against Greuther Furth.

Heidenheim’s win sees them promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club’s history on 67 points, with goal difference separating them and Darmstadt. And it was despair for Hamburg fans who invaded the Sandhausen pitch at full-time after they thought they secured promotion.

That means Hamburg will play Stuttgart in the Relegation playoff.
