Welcome back to the Get German Football News advent calendar. As the countdown to Christmas continues, so does our festive fun on day eleven, as we respect Bayern Munich’s unprecedented dominance in the Bundesliga in recent years, with 11 straight Bundesliga titles.
In the 2011/12 Bundesliga season, Borussia Dortmund set a league record haul of 81 points, as they lifted the Meisterschale in phenomenal fashion. After losing just three times all year, BvB amassed a league tally of 80 goals, conceding just 25, as they claimed their second consecutive title.
However, for those in Munich, this was the final straw. No longer could Dortmund boast about being the best in Germany, let alone the best ever. As the following season rolled over, Bayern were on a mission to demolish Dortmund’s record.
As the Rekordmeister lost just once all season, they achieved a staggering 91 points, smashing Die Schwarzgelben’s record on their way to re-establishing themselves as Germany’s finest. Nevertheless, they were not done there, as Jürgen Klopp’s side had pushed Bayern’s final button, and the record champions were now set on not letting their grip on the Meisterschale go.
A total of 90 points the following season, and then a point differential of ten the two years after, saw Bayern claim four straight Bundesliga titles without having to break a sweat. During this time, they had also broken yet another record, with no side ever previously winning four straight league titles.
Bayern had proved more than ever that they were the greatest force in Germany, and they were in no mood to stop. In 2016/17, RB Leipzig proved to be a threat during the Hinrunde, but their title ambitions were forgotten about during the Rückrunde, as Bayern pulled away before a 21-point difference prevented Schalke from claiming their first Bundesliga title in 2017/18.
The 2018/19 season saw Dortmund come close before defeat to Schalke in the Revierderby ended their title hopes. However, since then, only last season have Bayern been threatened to lose their crown, as BvB once again threw away the opportunity to dethrone the Rekordmeister with a heartbreaking draw to Mainz on the final day.
Eleven straight titles is a more than impressive feat, and it has seen Bayern become almost unstoppable. Nevertheless, with Bayer Leverkusen leading the way this campaign, could their dominance finally come to an end?
