Welcome back to the Get German Football News advent calendar. As the countdown to Christmas continues, so does our festive fun on day ten, as we celebrate the birthday of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.
Since joining Die Werkself from Celtic in January 2021 for €4 million, Frimpong has become one of the most exciting young wingbacks in Europe. During his first six months in Germany, Frimpong featured 13 times for Leverkusen in all competitions, assisting once, as he began to find his feet in the German game.
However, from the 2021/22 season on, the Dutch international would begin to prove why he was such a smart acquisition. With two goals and eight assists, his contribution would help guide the Werkself to a third-place finish in the Bundesliga, subsequently earning the club Champions League football once again.
Nevertheless, a difficult start to the following season would see Gerardo Seoane depart the club, as former Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso returned to Germany to take charge of Leverkusen. It has been an appointment that has ultimately not just revolutionised the club but also seen Frimpong develop into one of the most dangerous players in the Bundesliga.
Since Alonso’s appointment, Frimpong has recorded 13 goals and 18 assists in all competitions, becoming a crucial clog in the Spaniard’s system at right wingback. As well as this, Leverkusen have gone from fighting relegation to leading the Bundesliga table, as well as becoming a threat in Europe.
This season, Leverkusen are well on course to win the treble, something the club could finally achieve and write the wrongs of their past. However, to do so, they will need to keep Frimpong fit, as the now-23-year-old is truly one of their key components. Happy Birthday, Jeremie Frimpong!
