Freiburg hope to extend contract of Philipp Lienhart

Bild reports that Freiburg hopes to extend the contract of central defender Philipp Lienhart, who could be tempted by a move away in the summer.

Lienhart currently has a release clause in his contract of €15m and a move to LaLiga is of interest to the Austrian, who joined Freiburg from Real Madrid in 2018 for €2m. However, no club has shown interest in the 26-year-old yet.

Freiburg’s aim is to extend the contract of Lienhart beyond 2024 but if they are unable to do so they will then sell the defender this summer as it is their last chance to receive a fee. Champions League football next season with Freiburg may convince the 26-year-old to stay as an extension at the moment does not look clear.

Lienhart has been one of the stalwarts in Freiburg’s team this season. The Austria international has played 38 times for Freiburg this season while missing five games through injury.

Freiburg are level on points with Union Berlin heading into the final game of the season. If Freiburg are to qualify for the Champions League they must better Union’s result by five goals, assuming Union win.
