Bayern Munich are observing Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong

As reported by Sky Germany, Bayern Munich are observing Frenkie de Jong’s situation at Barcelona.

The 26-year-old has been rumoured to depart Catalonia in nearly every transfer window since he joined the club in 2019 from Ajax. However, de Jong has always insisted on earning a place at the club with his contract valid until 2026.

Nevertheless, throughout the course of Xavi’s tenure as Barcelona’s head coach, de Jong has rarely been relied upon in big games. Now, with İlkay Gündoğan’s move to the Blaugrana imminent as a free transfer from Manchester City, the Dutchman’s importance does not seem to be increasing.

The Dutch international appeared 43 times for the Spanish champions in all competitions last season, scoring two goals while collecting four assists. Thomas Tuchel is a fan of de Jong and this has been made clear internally at Bayern, and therefore, they will monitor the midfielder’s situation at Barcelona.

Bayern may look towards their own Dutch international Matthijs de Ligt to help convince his former Ajax colleague to move to Bavaria this summer. However, Der Rekordmeister are still considering other midfield options with Ibrahim Sangaré and Kalvin Phillips being reported as potential alternatives to Declan Rice.
