Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick may not play again this season

Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick has played just 103 minutes since November 1 and with recurring groin problems, the player’s season could be over with just five Bundesliga games remaining.

Schick (27) last played for Bayer Leverkusen on March 9, playing one minute in B04’s Europa League win against Ferencvaros as he worked his way back from injury. But speaking ahead of Leverkusen’s game against Union Berlin on Saturday, Xabi Alonso stated that Schick was not in the matchday squad.

Without adding further detail, Alonso said: “We have decided that he will go a different way.” According to Kicker, Alonso left unanswered the question as to whether Schick would need to undergo an operation, which would almost certainly mean that the forward would miss the remainder of the season.

“The improvement hasn’t come as quickly as hoped,” added Alonso. “It’s not easy for us and it’s not easy for him. We have to keep waiting.”

Due to Schick being sidelined and therefore not match fit should he make a recovery, it’s likely that Bayer Leverkusen will have to plan for the remainder of the season without their striker.

On Saturday, they travel to Union Berlin before hosting rivals FC Köln and then a trip to Rome for the Europa League semi-final.
